Planning a Family-Friendly Anchorage Adventure
Alaska, the Last Frontier, is on so many of our bucket lists, but it seems that many parents with young children are too intimidated to make the journey unless they are on a cruise ship. I am someone who has always had zero interest in going on a cruise but have always wanted to go to Alaska. When my husband’s best friend announced he was getting married near Anchorage last summer, we jumped at the opportunity to make the journey with our baby. Newbie mistakes were definitely made, but overall, what we discovered was mild temperatures, an abundance of wildlife, and stunning scenery that enthralled the whole family. Spend more time making memories and less time planning because I have compiled the ultimate kid-friendly activities in the Anchorage region.
- The Coastal Trail- A paved, eleven-mile trail that runs along the Coast in Anchorage, the Coastal Trail is by far one of America’s most beautiful coastal walks. Along the trail, expect to observe bald eagles, mudflats, driftwood, and views of the snowy Chugach Mountains. It’s also a great opportunity to stop at Earthquake Park for a teaching moment. In 1964 the most powerful earthquake ever recorded in North America struck this spot.
Why it’s kid-friendly: The trail is paved, making it easily accessible for strollers and bikes. There are also multiple picnic tables and playgrounds along the way.
2. The Alaska Zoo- In operation since 1969, the Alaska Zoo cares for orphaned and injured animals that would not have been able to survive in the wild. The zoo is a great way to introduce your children to the wildlife of Alaska up close and safely. Animals like the Amur tiger, snow leopard, and moose will spark curiosity in children of all ages.
Why it’s kid-friendly: This is not one of those large and crowded zoos that will give every parent anxiety. The Alaska Zoo is a quaint place that offers the opportunity to learn about the native animals of the region without a large crowd.
3. Take a Day Cruise- Depending on how far you want to drive, two great options are not too far from Anchorage, the Kenai Fords Tour (2 hours away) or tours of Prince William Sound (1.5 hours away). You and your children alike will be mesmerized by the abundance of wildlife including, puffins, sea lions, and whales. Although tours are expensive, this is a once in a lifetime experience for your family that you will never forget.
Why it’s kid-friendly: There are shorter tour options specifically targeted for families with children, with 4 or 5-hour tours available at each destination mentioned above. Water is generally calm and tours are so visually stimulating they will enthrall even the busiest of bees.
4. Day trip to Girdwood- Take a short drive from Anchorage to explore Girdwood, a small resort town nestled in the Chugach mountains about 40 minutes south of the city. There are enough kid-friendly adventures in Girdwood to last a day or a week. Grab your hiking pack and head to the Lower Winner Creek Trail. An easy 3-mile trail, including a boardwalk and a dirt trail, Winner Creek Trail is not your typical hike. Hikers have the opportunity to hop into a metal hand tram and pull themselves across the raging Glacier Creek below.
Other notable activities in Girdwood include the Girdwood Playground and Skate Park, as well as, the Alaska Wildlife Conservation Center.
Why it’s kid-friendly: Super laid back atmosphere, casual restaurants and plenty of outdoor adventures.
5. Reindeer Farm- About 45 minutes from Anchorage in the town of Palmer, your tiny humans can experience the magic of reindeer. Visitors get to tour the farm, feed the reindeer, and take photos (family holiday card… check). The farm is also home to native Alaskan animals like moose, bison, yak, and elk. An added bonus to this activity is, it will probably be one of the cheapest excursions you’ll take, at only $11/person for ages 12+ and $9 for children younger than 12.
Why it’s kid-friendly: Need I say more than reindeer? If that’s not enough, tours only last an hour and all activities are hands-on.
